AutoGraph, the map of origami

The curious and creative geographical maps are not new, but this no cardinal points, with South America upside down, Antarctica and Africa in miniature pointing westward, is very original.

Yet the AuthaGraph World Map, a two-dimensional projection of the world map created by the Japanese Hajime Narukawa, is actually very accurate, because it preserves the aspect ratio of oceans
and continents. And the scientific rigor with which it was produced earned her the 2016 Good Design Grand Award, one of the most prestigious design awards in Japan.

COMPROMISE REAL. As we know, the two-dimensional cards necessarily distort what certain aspects of the representation of the Earth: the scale, form, distance ... It's the price to pay to represent a 3D object (the Earth ...) on a plane (a sheet of paper). Even the Mercator map, which we use for centuries, has its own problems: the exaggerated proportions of the continents most distant from the equator, and so Greenland end up rivaling Africa by size, when in fact it is 14 times smaller.
CARD GAMES. To achieve greater respect for reality than traditional 2D maps, Narukawa started from a 3D globe that has divided into 96 equal regions, then transferring these to another solid, this time equipped with faces: the tetrahedron (a polyhedron with four faces triangular).

Opening the solid as you do with an origami, here is that you get to a two-dimensional projection that develops in one rectangle, without interruption, in which the proportions of seas and continents are maintained

FROM SOLID PLATE, AND VICE VERSA. The AuthaGraph World Map can also be fully opened and accompanied by other copies of itself for some special uses, such as tracking the passage of the ISS on the various areas of the world in two dimensions. Or if necessary, it can fold back to give her a three-dimensional shape. In short, a real world origami.

Additional steps will be needed to improve the accuracy, for example by increasing the number of subdivisions and initial folds. But the instrument is still particularly effective and faithful
