THAT PERSON'S NOT ME! In 2015 Teghan Lucas, researcher from the University of Adelaide (Australia) has asked the question to see if an innocent person might risk, due to a strong physical resemblance, to be mistaken for the perpetrator of a crime. Through special software analyzed more than 4,000 photos of human faces, focusing on the distance between the main elements, such as the
eyes and ears. Then it calculated the likelihood that these "measures" coincide in more people.
UNIQUE AND UNREPEATABLE. It found that the chance to share just 8 measures with someone else in the world are one in a trillion (or a million million). And with 7.4 billion of land, there is only one chance in 135 that exist on Earth even just a couple of doubles. If we consider that the human face is much more complex of eight individual measures, we understand that for a facial recognition software, the possibilities that everyone has a look-alike are close to zero. But this is not enough to exhaust the problem.
A SCHEME SUITABLE. Hardly, observing two identical faces, we notice a difference in the millimeter distance between the ears. This is because the brain retains a memory of known faces more like a full archive of "maps", which to an exact photograph album. This ability to recognize friendly faces for essential characteristics allows us, for example, to figure out who that individual is a loved one, even if you cut your hair, or if it's rigged.
FACE STANDARD. The way the fusiform gyrus - the brain area involved in facial recognition - recognizes the features of a face more like a sum of parts, which in single and precise spot measurements. From this point of view, if you live in England and have a face "average", for example, round face, bulbous nose, brown eyes and short blond hair, a beard hipster, chances are good that you have the "look-alike ".
GOOD POSSIBILITY. 55% of the world population has brown eyes, one person in 10 has a round face, and 24.2% has a bulbous nose. 2% of men's natural blond, and 1 out of 6 - in Britain - has the full beard. A man with these characteristics would have about 74,000 "look-alike". And they are not even the most common traits in the world. In the digital age we live in, with an incredible amount of pictures circulating on the Net, to meet someone that looks like it should not be difficult. Unless we have a very particular face.
