With
ten thousand known species in the world, ants are believed to outnumber
humans about a million to one. But that's not the only seriously
impressive fact about these tiny creatures. Worker ants
can lift weight twice their size, and their soldiers
are studied by U.S. defense analysts. The success of ants as a species
is evident in the fact that they've been around for at least 30 million
years, and their ability to work together has had perhaps the biggest
impact on that success, according to American biologist Edward Osborne
Wilson. Compared to humans, who have only roamed Earth for about one
million years, ants have proven their success.
