If the password is in the eye

Passwords are boring: easy to "pierce", difficult to remember, and, to make matters worse, many services have different rules (= a password for each one!) And, moreover, they force us to change them periodically.

This is why many companies are looking with increasing interest in security solutions that use biometrics: fingerprints, iris scanning, recognition of the user's face.

FACE TO PASSWORD. To be honest, facial or iris recognition systems available today for the consumer market are still few and do not work too well. But it was the same in 2013, when Apple introduced the iPhone recognition of fingerprints.

Since then the system has been gradually evolved, by Apple itself but also from other companies, and in 3 years it is available on dozens of smartphone models, including some mid-range or medium-low.

According Sayeed Choudhury, Qualcomm, we expect something similar for biometric recognition systems.
EYE FOR AN EYE ... Among the most promising technologies is the recognition of facial lines and eye: the first was introduced for the first time on the consumer market by Google, with version 4 of Android (Ice Cream Sandwich ), and it has since evolved into the eye recognition. Unlike other biometric systems it does not require dedicated hardware, because it uses the camera for selfies.

The real challenge is the software: these types of authentication are very complex algorithms that much CPU-intensive and graphics processor devices. From the user's point of view this results in longer waiting times in order to unlock their device or to access an online service.

... FOR IRIS IRIS. Other speech for the iris scanning: already tested in airports, it is faster and more secure fingerprint because it uses a greater number of recognition points. The only drawback, needs an infrared camera, hardware that standard devices do not have.

PAY SAFE. What could give the decisive acceleration to the biometric recognition technology it is the digital payments market, where giants of the caliber Mastercard and VISA are pushing to increase the security levels of services and reduce fraud.

Just Mastercard, whose goal in the space of a few years is to retire permanently passwords, has conducted numerous experiments testing forms of recognition based on the heart beat and vocal footprint.

JUST ONE selfies. More and Mastercard recently launched selfies authentication, where you can authorize a payment making a selfie as he winks.

This precaution prevents someone can pass itself off for us by putting a picture of us in front of the camera. According to the data disclosed by the company, 90% of users have found the system much more comfortable and faster than the traditional ones.

What should we then expect in the coming years? According to experts, the passwords are set to retire, replaced first by fingerprints and then by face recognition or eye as an additional authentication factor.
